Vicia faba

Description

Introduced in 1835 by Mr Bunyard from Kent, England, this is a chefs favourite because of their unique flavour and colour.

Producing a heavy crop, the pods are long and contain around seven beans.

Harvesting seed

Collect seeds during the dry stage before the first frost when the pods are dry and brittle.

If the pods are not dry before the first frost, pull up the plants and dry indoors.

When dry, break open the pods and separate the seeds. Store in a cool, dark, dry place in an airtight container.
