Papaver rhoeas

Wild Poppy

Description

With its brilliant scarlet flowers, usually with a black blob at the base of the petals, this native wild flower needs no introduction.

The single, red, cup-shaped flower is the classic poppy bloom, a native wildflower of Europe, poppies paint a new road verge or embankment a brilliant hue in their first year.

Harvesting seed

Wait until the seed pod turns brown on the plant and the stalks turn yellow. When openings appear below the crown of the pod cut the pods and place face down in a paper bag to dry for about 3 weeks.

Once dry, pick up the stems and tap onto the sides of a bowl to release the seeds.

Store in an airtight container.
