Centaurea cyanus

Description

Black Ball strain, has long been an indicator of good farm land and so symbolizes fertility and abundance, Dark milk chocolate (black on cloudy days) flowers are both a splendid border plant, whose colour doesn't fade and also a fine flower for cutting and it dries brilliantly too.

Harvesting seed

Allow the flowers to fade and the petals to drop naturally from the bud, leaving a tan coloured seed head.

As the seed head dries it begins to open flat to release the seeds. Harvest just before this happens by cutting off the seed heads and hanging up in a paper bag to dry indoors. Seeds will fall into the bag.

Winnow, dry thoroughly and store in an airtight container.
